My younger brother has been in the market for a car for a few months now so I have constantly been on the hunt to find one for him. He gave me an extremely strict budget of $3,000 to piss me off and also see what I could come up with. I stumbled upon this 740 wagon tonight and sent him the link so he could check it out.

I don't know much about 740s but I think they're pretty damn cool cars considering I basically grew up in one. What do you guys think about this one? NP or CP?

CP, he basically tells you he's made a mess of the interior, unless you were going to strip it yourself I would keep away.

Ya, I've seen all those cars already, he didn't like any of them. I really like that Duster, but he's out at college and wouldn't have a place to get the car into good enough running condition.

The interior does make me nervous. My brother wouldn't care what it looks like because he's a weird dude, but who knows. I might go take a look at it sometime this week if I can find the time. It should be interesting to see what kind of shape it's in!

Really? $3000 budget pisses you off? You can get a really good car for that price range! I just went on your local CL for a few mins, I found quite a few awesome cars.

Oh don't get me wrong I know there are plenty of good cars out there for under $3,000, but he is unbelievably picky. I'm about to tell him to up his budget, quick being picky, or find a car on his own haha

What are his other criteria? Besides the $3000 limit?

At least he told you a price range though! That's actually the most important part, but for some reason, too many people omit that criterion when asking for car suggestions.

It's gotta be "cool" by his standards. That is about it in terms of criteria haha

I found a 280Z that needed a small bit of work before it would be 100% road worthy and he didn't like it. WHO THE FUCK DOESN'T LIKE A Z CAR. My brother is a man of extremely...odd tastes.

If I had 3k I would't be looking at old Volvo wagons. My mom bought a nice Miata with slightly high mileage for 3k. My friend bought a Porsche 944 for 1750. Is there a specific criteria for what kind of car your brother is looking for?

I've suggested miatas but he thinks they are women's cars. The cars I'm trying to find for him have to be "cool" by his standards. They have to run and drive pretty well because he is away at school so won't have tools or a place to work on the car if any problems arise. He's extremely picky.

I thought a Miata would be the answer, but he, like countless other people, think that they are women's or hairdresser's cars. It's ignorant. He could get a great Miata for 3 grand! But I will definitely be showing him your suggestions, so thank you!

What a shame he has that opinion about Miatas. I think yes they are "cute" but I love my mom's and lust for a Miata very often. Did he give you any examples about what "Cool" constitutes? (I know your pain I have helped a few of my friends find cars/ search and it's pretty painful). Good luck!

Ya I wish he would realize that the Miata is a great little car. Whatever, it's his loss! His example of cool would be something like the turbo brick above, he loves the PI Crown Vics, and also Chevy C10's. It's hard to find cars like that in good working order for cheap though.

Ya you can find them for a great price in my area too, but he is so obnoxious that he requires that it be all blacked out. I found a great one that was dark blue with black steelies (it was once a Michigan State Trooper's car) and he didn't like it because it wasn't black.

Seems like he has a very specific taste in cars. Is he a gear head? Or just a casual car observer? I would see if during one of the breaks if you could take him for a test drive in one of the good cars that he shoots down (like a miata) to see if you can sway his opinion. If not keep looking for that blacked out CVPI :P

He's more of a casual observer. He likes to help me on projects I do with my cars but he's not nearly as into cars as I am. Guns are his thing. I think I will take him for a test drive in one or two of the cars that he's rejected and see if that changes his mind. Thanks for the suggestion!

I think I can speak for all of Oppo when I say that you should be looking at e30s (if you need practicality) and Miatas (if you don't).

The E30 was the first car I started searching for when my brother told me he wanted a car! I've looked all over St. Louis and there isn't one in good condition for a reasonable price so its unfortunately not an option right now. Even if I saw an E30 for a good price, I would buy it before my brother could haha

I kind of have that problem too. I've been looking at e36 M3s with my brother, and I think as soon as we find a good one I may be tempted to snake it from him.
